Reiki Symbols

Reiki symbols

Reiki symbols are one of the 5 pillars of Reiki. The Reiki symbols, along with the Reiki principles, meditation, hands on healing and Reiki attunements make up the basis of Reiki. Three Reiki symbols are learnt in Reiki Level 2, and are an incredible tool to use during any Reiki treatment.

The symbols amplify energy

The Reiki symbols all hold different energetic properties and powers. Learning these symbols is a big part of the difference between Reiki Level 1 and Reiki Level 2. Reiki symbols amplify energy and can be used both on yourself, on others, and for clearing spaces too. You can also use them to manifest your future, to heal painful past events, and to focus you in the present moment.

Symbols connect you more deeply to Reiki

Reiki symbols also connect you more deeply to Reiki energy, as well as the energy of the symbol. They allow you to focus your mind and give you intention when practicing Reiki. When you use these Reiki symbols in a treatment, it provides a deeper level of healing for your recipient, and also yourself! Yes, remember when you give a Reiki treatment, you are also receiving Reiki yourself too!

When to use the Reiki symbols

It’s up to you when you feel ready to use the Reiki symbols. Once you learn the symbols in Reiki Level 2, you are free to use your intuition and use the symbol that feels right for you in that moment. Of course, certain symbols are used for particular things, but ultimately trusting your own inner knowing is best! Each symbol has a name, and when you use the symbol, chant the name three times to give it strength and power. You can also use the Reiki symbol names as a mantra throughout any Reiki healing session.

Notice the difference

When you do choose to use them, enjoy the practice! You might like to notice how you feel when you use the Reiki symbols, and the energy that they bring to your Reiki practice. Notice any other changes in your mind and body afterwards too. You might find that you resonate with one more so than the others, and that is okay too. These symbols carry a certain energy, and that might be the energy that you need more so at that particular time. You will also find that as you continue on your Reiki journey, different symbols will pop up at different times along the way.

Where the symbols originated from

Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki, incorporated these symbols into the system of Reiki around 1923. Originally, Usui began teaching the 5 Reiki Principles, then meditation and mantras. Usui only brought in palm healing and later symbols in the last years of his teaching before his death in 1926.

Variations in symbols

Reiki is a lineage, meaning a Reiki Master will pass down the knowledge of Reiki to their students. The practice of Reiki and the Reiki symbols were not originally written down. This is why there are now some variations with the way symbols are drawn in different Reiki lineages. However, the most important thing when it comes to any energy healing, is intention. Symbols are simply a way we can connect to various attributes of Reiki energy.

The power of the Reiki symbols

Symbols have been used across many cultures over time, and pre-date the written word. They possess a power that surpasses words, as they relate to emotions, feelings and energy. Words are limited and are a construct of our mind. When you draw or use a Reiki symbol, it is important to tune into the feeling and energy of the symbol.
