‘What does Reiki feel like’ is a common question Reiki practitioners receive quite often! The quick answer is that every person is different and can feel many different sensations. Each session for the same person can also vary too. However, there are some common things you might feel when having Reiki.
1. Tingling or pins and needles type sensations
As energy is channelled into your body and your energy starts to shift, you might notice tingling sensations in your hands and feet. You might also feel pins and needles type sensations, most typically again in hands and feet. However, it’s not uncommon to also feel tingling or energy moving up and down your entire body. You might also feel energy moving in or out of your body too! It might feel a bit odd, but know that it’s perfectly normal, and just a positive sign that energy is moving.
2. Heat or cold
It’s very common to feel heat underneath your Reiki practitioner’s hands, or in the areas of your body that your Reiki healer is treating. You might also feel heat in other areas, or even a hot flush sensation! If this happens, Reiki is likely uncovering and flushing out an energy blockage. This is a positive sign that energy is moving and flowing!
Other times you might feel cold in various areas, or have cold shivers. This is a sign that energy has perhaps been stagnant or moving very slowly in that particular area. It’s a good thing anytime you feel energy flushing or moving around your body. Energy is meant to flow smoothly and efficiently, so we want to dissolve any blocks that are getting in the way!
3. Feeling heavy or stuck to the table
This is common in my personal experience where I often feel very heavy, like my body is stuck to the table. It can sometimes take awhile for me to sit up once the Reiki treatment has finished! Know that it’s normal, and energy is simply working its magic. It might take a little longer for Reiki to integrate and process, so drink plenty of water afterwards.
4. Feeling light or floating sensations
Some people feel like they are floating, or even have out of body type experiences! This is again not uncommon. Reiki opens up your energy channels, including your third eye, so you might experience floating, or even astral travelling. This is nothing to be scared about, but if you do feel uncomfortable, simply take some long, deep breaths and focus on grounding yourself back into the present moment. If you do have astral travel experiences, it would indicate your energy centres are quite open, and you most likely are very receptive to the powers of Reiki energy!
5. Seeing colours, images, or have random memories pop up
Reiki healing interacts with everyone’s energies in different ways. If you are a more naturally creative or intuitive person, you might see different colours or images. Sometimes Reiki healing can bring random memories up that might have been hidden under the surface for some time. It is always interesting to share your insights with your Reiki practitioner afterwards. They might be able to shed some light on the meanings behind your colours, images or memories. Colours can also indicate you are tapping into particular chakra points. If your Reiki healer is working on a particular chakra, you might start to see the colour of that particular chakra point in your minds eye.
6. Twitching, shaking or coughing
Twitching can be a sign that you are very deeply relaxed and about to fall asleep. It can also indicate that Reiki is releasing an energy block at that point. If you are prone to shaking or twitching in a more intense manner, or coughing throughout a Reiki treatment, it can indicate that you’re very in tune and sensitive to Reiki, and also perhaps other energies or spirits that can sometimes come in during a Reiki healing. It is best to talk with your Reiki practitioner afterwards if this happens to you, to get a better understanding of what you’re experiencing. It is nothing to be worried or scared about, simply just another experience of Reiki energy healing!
7. You might fall asleep!
If you fall asleep in Reiki, it’s the best thing! It simply means you are super relaxed and out of your conscious mind, which is when Reiki can really work its magic. If you feel yourself relaxing and drifting into sleep mode, just let yourself go. When you sleep during a Reiki healing, you will often wake up feeling very deeply rested, like your soul has had time to rest. A ‘Reiki sleep’ is often far more nourishing than a regular sleep, so enjoy it!
8. You might feel nothing at all
Feeling nothing at all doesn’t mean Reiki energy is not working, it simply means that you might not be as sensitive to energy as someone else. This is neither good nor bad, it just means that everyone is different! Trust that Reiki is always working, and instead of feeling sensations, you might notice other things, such as a change in your mood afterwards, or a shift in your perspective. Reiki works on energy, and when you shift your vibration, the world around you changes too. If you don’t feel anything during your Reiki healing, instead start to notice what changes are happening in your external world. It’s a sign that your inner energy has indeed shifted and changed vibration!
